Nine Propositions on Analytical Clarity

Share

These propositions emerged while preparing a recent presentation on analysis, reporting, performance management, and governance. They reflect my current thinking on how organisations create understanding, action, and learning.

  1. Excessive explanation may be a symptom of weak analytical structure.
  2. Partitioning information is often mistaken for causal analysis.
  3. Explicit analytical structures create unified and inspectable understanding.
  4. Explicit analytical structures create explicit accountability structures.
  5. Understanding alone does not create action.
  6. Performance management converts understanding into action and learning.
  7. Governance aligns and protects the conditions for understanding and action.
  8. Organisations often settle into equilibria that sustain existing behaviours.
  9. Clarity is an emergent property of the whole system.

At a high level:

Measurement (Observation)
→ Structural Analysis (Understanding)
→ Performance Management (Action)

Governance aligns and protects the conditions under which the system operates.

Clarity is not a presentation quality. It is a system property.
